Alexander Henry Rhind (1833–63) devoted his short life to antiquarianism. Developing tubercular symptoms, he passed the winters of 1855–7 in Egypt, where he made the studies recorded in this 1862 book. His account covers both archaeological discoveries and the reuse of the Theban necropolis as homes for modern Egyptians.
